Lars' 15th Birthday

Our fairly-regular updates have been interrupted by the business of life and the celebration of Christmas.

Going back two weeks, Lars celebrated his 15th birthday. He had Mor and Far, and his friend Zach come for lunch and celebrating. Here are some photos from the birthday:)

The cake Martha made for dessert.

Happy Birthday Erik!

Just one more post, I promise...to say:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ERIK!!!!!
Hope you have a wonderful day celebrating. Thank the Lord for another year of life He has given you.

A Poem for December

December

                                    First snow! The flakes,
So few, so light,
Remake the world
In solid white.

All bundled up,
We feel as if
We were fat penguins,
Warm and stiff.

Downtown, the stores
Half split their sides,
And Mother brings home
Things she hides.

Old carols peal.
The dusk is dense.
There is a mood
Of sweet suspense.

The shepherds wait,
The kings, the tree-
All wait for something
Yet to be,

Some miracle.
And then it's here,
Wrapped up in hope-
Another year!

Things are moving along...

On Sunday November 30th, we received another offer on our home. The couple is in the Navy from Groton, CT. Todd believes that the man is a Navy instructor who will be stationed here for 3 years. The Navy site is five minutes from our house. Their financing is in place and they will have an inspection done on our house before the end of December. They would like to close on this house on or before February 25th. Our lawyer and the buyer's lawyer have checked everything and are in agreement that things can move forward. We anticipate a busy January and February packing the house. We will keep you informed as time goes by. Thank you for praying for our family.

Home from our trip: Update

Hey Family and Friends:
We arrived home from our trip to Tennessee and Mississippi this morning about a half hour before the snowstorm began. Praise the Lord!
We had a wonderful visit with dear family in TN  and found a home that we love in MS. However, halfway through our trip to TN we received news that the buyers for our house in NY pulled out of the contract. We are confident though that our time was not wasted. We had a wonderful visit and thank you to all who made it possible:) You are amazing and such blessings!
We have more showings coming up on our house. Our agent believes that an offer or two potentially will come soon, but if not, we will hunker down here for the winter and put our home back on the market in the spring. Thank you to everyone for your prayers and just keep praying for us!
Here are some Bible verses that have encouraged us about waiting on God's perfect timing:

Psalm 33:20 We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield.
Psalm 130:5 I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on Him. I have put my hope in His word.

Much love and hugs: The Bengtson 8

Snow Day and Homemade Hot Chocolate!

Looking out the back door at an almost-white winter wonderland!
Some of our back porch...

It is a chilly snow day in NY! After getting home this morning from our road trip, the snow began! The 4 pictures are some shots taken at about 4:00 p.m., only 5 hours into the storm! Snow is expected to continue into tomorrow morning!
The kids' sleds-almost buried after leaving them for
just a few minutes!!
The tall bush at the right corner of the house...and the field and woods beyond.

What could be better after the children (adults enjoy it too) have come in from their play, wet, cold, and tired, than to serve them hot chocolate-homemade is so much better. Here is the way-too-simple recipe that you should make today!!!
Hot Chocolate
1/2 C sugar (adjust amount to taste)
1/4 C unsweetened cocoa powder
dash salt
1 1/3 C hot water
3 C milk
1 tsp vanilla or mint extract
Instructions:
Throw everything into a pot and heat through on low heat, whisking occasionally.
That's pretty much it...just serve it up-add cream or milk-and enjoy!

Hot chocolate heating on the stove...
Ready to serve!

House Update

Hey Family,
On Sunday afternoon we received an offer on our home. We countered; they accepted. The buyers live in Guilderland, NY and have nothing to sell. The closing has been scheduled on or before January 5, 2015. This means that we must find a home in Tennessee or Mississippi. Road trip! Our plan is to leave early Wednesday morning and arrive in TN Thursday afternoon. Friday and Saturday are set up with appointments to see homes with Monday as an extra day. Traveling back Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Thanksgiving with friends on Thursday.

Today, Tuesday, is a day of preparation and snowman building:)
We would appreciate your prayers for safe travel and to find a home and a church. We will update the blog when we get back home.
Thank you for your prayers and we wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving.
We love you!
Todd, Margit, Martha, Lars, Eleanor, Ingrid, Bjorn, and Matthias

Ellie's 12th!!

Miss Eleanor turned 12 years old on Friday. We were in Connecticut visiting Bestefar and Bestemor and we were able to celebrate the day before. We are so thankful to have a 12-year-old!

 Cake made by Martha

Ellie blew out the candle and Bestefar was shocked about something:)
Ellie received many wonderful gifts including this lovely blue dress!
Legwarmers bought by Bestemor for old time's sake. Remember these Tante Katy?
When we got home Ellie was able to open a package which contained a beautiful Bible case. Thank you Farfar and Farmor!!!
If you can't read the inscription, it says "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

A hymn to encourage you today

Having great hymn writers of the past and present allows us to sing great hymns in the church today. We sang this great hymn this past Sunday and wanted to share it with you all. Anyone who may want to try singing it, it is set to the tune of "Before the Throne of God Above".

You are the Father's pure delight,
In heaven you reign as God and King.
We bow before your power and might,
And of your greatness gladly sing.
We give you praise, all-glorious Lord,
With hearts aglow we now draw near;
O Christ, by all the church adored,
We worship you with godly fear;
We worship you with godly fear.

Upon the awful cross you died;
How deep your sorrows, who can tell?
We bless you for the crimson tide
That saves us from the depths of hell.
You rose triumphant from the grave,
And then ascended to the skies!
You ever live above to save,
Our hears with adoration rise;
Our hears with adoration rise.

Throughout our lives we see your grace,
What lovingkindness you have shown.
As we review the past we trace
Your mercies, which we gladly own.
Through sorrows, trials and distress,
Your hand has held us on our way;
We bless you for your faithfulness,
And bring our thanks to you today,
And bring our thanks to you today.

O Lord, our waiting hearts inflame,
To spread abroad your matchless worth;
We long to make your glorious Name
Admired and loved through all the earth.
Then on that day when you appear,
Millions of souls shall then make known
How great you are to them, and dear;
The glory shall be yours alone;
The glory shall be yours alone.

Family Updates

Hello Family!

The lack of updates has been due to phone and computer issues. Mom spent 6 hours on the phone in one day trying to resolve those issues. Our internet is spotty and the phones are unpredictable. Grrrr! Mom will be narrating this update and Martha will be typing it.

Matthias seems to have the beginnings of his very first cold. He's still pretty wonderful and happy a lot of the time. Another tooth has joined his first. His diet has expanded to include cheese and yogurt-praise the Lord he is not allergic to milk! He's sitting up like a pro now and reaching for things quite distant from him. He is also sleeping 10-12 hours at night. He is chattering very much these days and seems to imitate our sounds. He's especially good at "da-da". This makes his daddy extremely proud.

Bjorn had his 7 year physical on Monday. Our young man is very healthy and has grown an astounding 5 inches and gained 10 pounds in under a year and a half!!
Math continues to be his best and favorite subject. He has developed a true love for hunting with his big brother-hunting for red and gray squirrels and chipmunks, that is.

Ingrid only got two wrong on her math test today-mom's jumping up and down!!
Ingrid's newest news is that she has gotten a haircut-pretty short. She looks exactly like the picture of Tante Ingrid that was sent by Cliff on the same day she got it cut!! She loves it!
The Lord is healing a rather deep cut that she got on her thumb while making notches on a homemade arrow. She did not get stitches and has learned a great deal on how to take care of wounds.

Eleanor is looking forward very much to celebrating her 12th birthday. Ellie was just in the kitchen and said: "Next year I'll be a teenager and my birthday will be on a Saturday and I won't have to do any schoolwork!!"
Ellie is also learning how to take care of her new earrings. Her favorite ones are the "diamonds".
Just so that you all know, Ellie is probably going to be taller than mom by next month!

Lars, our hunter, hasn't shot anything else, (besides squirrels), since you heard about his first deer. He hopes to get another at hunting camp soon.
Lars highly recommends the books "Robinson Crusoe" and "The Hobbit". So if it's been awhile since you read these, take them off your shelf, dust them off, and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of literature.
Lars's braces are off for those of you who don't know, and he's probably 6 foot by now, or maybe 6' 1". By Christmas he'll be about 7' 5" and his shoulders won't be able to fit through normal doors.
His internship (repairing musical instruments) continues to go really well and he's learning a lot; including how to make pot racks out of trombone slides.

Martha...in the first person now. My favorite school subject will never be math. But, I'm working very hard on the ever-practical Stewardship math from Math-U-See. I just finished a lesson on Taxes (yeah!) and am working on a Banking lesson. It covers everything from giving a tip at a restaurant to writing a check and keeping a checkbook.
I'm weekly teaching piano to one girl who just turned 12. Lessons are going very well and she's moving right along in Suzuki Book 1. Thanks to Farmor, I've learned a lot about teaching the piano.
I'm holding two mother's helper jobs. One is weekly and the other is monthly or as-needed.
11th grade continues to be very busy. One nice thing about homeschooling is I can fit in schoolwork around my busy schedule. Sometimes I do school in the morning, sometimes afternoon or evening. Sometimes both! I have lots of different subjects. I'm taking Physics this year which is proving to be a bit of a challenge so far. I don't really have a favorite subject:)

Margit is kept very busy with schoolwork, housework, and meal preparation. Every day.
We are through with our first quarter of school already and into our second. The older three work mostly independently which frees up my time to work with Ingrid and Bjorn one-on-one. We finished our first biography on great American Christians. Fanny Crosby was who we studied. I highly recommend Ethel Barrett's book on Fanny Crosby (which can be found at Tusen Takk). Our artist for the quarter was John Singleton Copley. His was an amazing artist during the Colonial Period in America. His work is so true to real life and he uses light so effectively. Most of his paintings are portraits of people of the time. My favorite is the painting of his family.
The housework is now accomplished before every showing by everyone. Wonderful!
Meal preparation duties are being shared between mom, dad, and the kids. For instance, Todd smoked a pork loin and Ellie made coleslaw for a dinner, Martha made a chicken soup for a lunch, and Bjorn assisted with a kielbasa-bean soup. Ingrid helped make sugar cookies, and Lars makes amazing scrambled eggs.

Todd is continually working to provide meat for our family. It's hunting season! As meat prices go up, we go down to our freezer. So grateful!
Even though we have no offer on our home, Todd is continually maintaining the home and outside, working on gardens and lawn and making sure things are in good working order for the next owners.
Last Sunday and this Sunday coming up, Todd has been assigned by our pastor to review a chapter during our Sunday School hour in a book called "Bookends of the Christian Life" by Jerry Bridges and Bob Bevington. His particular chapter deals with the encouragement we receive as Christians from the Holy Spirit.
Todd has been teaching Martha about driving...She will get her permit soon! Mom notices a couple more white hairs:)

That's a general update on our family. Hope everybody has a wonderful Wednesday:)

God gives family time and good food!

On Thursday night the Patriots played the Jets.
We, being Patriot fans, decided we would watch the game. It was an 8:30 p.m. game, so we decided dinner would be finger food and football-type. I wanted to share pictures of the food that we made and recipes so you can have your own family football (or whatever other sport) night!

We started off the night with dad's famous chicken wings.
Start off with however many wings your family usually consumes. Buy enough for everyone to have at least four or five.
Marinate them in frig in ziploc bag all day
                         in garlic-a few cloves, minced
                      lemon juice- a sprinkle
soy sauce- enough to cover wings
Bake wings for about 30-40 minutes at 350F then finish them on the grill. When they are done, drizzle buffalo wing sauce over the top and let them rest and saturate for a few minutes. We served the wings with our family's "secret" blue cheese dressing recipe. Comment on this post and we will send it to you and only you!
The finished product is the picture below.

Next out of the oven were jalapeno poppers. Here is the way-too-simple recipe:

Jalapeno Poppers
Use frozen jalapenos or other hot peppers-as many as you like. You can let them thaw a little-doesn't matter.
Mix together:
softened cream cheese
shredded cheese-any kind works-we use cheddar
a pinch of seasoned salt
a little milk to thin it down
Fill the peppers and let bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes or until golden and bubbly!

These are the peppers halfway through the meal-there were no leftovers!

I'm sure everyone knows nachos are a classic game food, but do you know how to make them??

Nachos
Spread a cookie sheet with tortilla chips-any kind.
sprinkle plenty of shredded cheese over top.
sometimes we like to put black beans on ours as well.
Bake in oven on broil for no more than 3-5 minutes. They turn golden-brown quickly! Don't walk away!
Spread with whatever toppings you like:
our favorites are: salsa, hot peppers, and sour cream.

Not the best picture and not enough cheese, but you get the idea!

The evening finished up with Favorite Fudgy Brownies made by Ellie and Bjorn! Sorry Amanda:)

Favorite Fudgy Brownies
If you are a brownie purist and don't like the nuts, simply leave them out.
1 C all purpose flour
2/3 C unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tsp salt
4 eggs
2 C sugar
1 C butter, softened
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 C semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 C chopped walnuts, optional
Preheat oven to 325F. Grease 9x13 pan and set aside. Stir together flour, cocoa powder, and salt. Cream eggs, sugar, butter, and vanilla. Stir flour mixture into butter mixture until moist and blended. Fold in chocolate chips and optional nuts. Spread evenly in pan. Bake 25-35 minutes. Check center. Cool brownies 30-40 minutes. Cut and enjoy!

Now you're jealous!!

God gives bees and flowers:)

There were bees everywhere one afternoon...and of course I decided we needed pictures:)
Any comments or suggestions on the photography please!

God gives play!

Every Fall at least once, all of the younger kids and I (Martha) play the leaf-catching game.
The leaf-catching game is a made-up game that was created by Martha and some friends a few years ago. All that you have to do is wait for leaves to fall from the trees and catch them when they come. You play for a certain amount of time, and every leaf you catch you get point. Sometimes different leaf colors mean larger point values!
When there's a big gust of wind, well, you can imagine the chaos! Here are some pictures of the kids (all except baby and me-the photographer) playing leaf-catching on a windy morning in early October. I was able to get only limited shots because it was a 10 minute duration and then it was back to schoolwork!

Bjorn says, "I just missed one!!"

"Get out of the way Martha!!"

I don't have a caption for this one...

 A bit of a lull...

Right back at it!!!

God gives a poem for Matthias

my baby's feet
they are a treat
I like to "eat"
my baby's feet

sweet baby mine
your smile does shine
for you I pine
sweet baby mine

my baby's belly
so full of jelly
rolling pell melly
my baby's belly

my baby's head
sometimes turns red
when hello I've said
my baby's head

sweet baby's tooth
I say in truth
now let's show Ruth
sweet baby's tooth

my sweet baby boy
now here's a toy
our sixth little joy

God gives us...the 80's?

A few days back in our Latin and Greek studies, we came upon the root word vis or vid. I told the children about Julius Caesar, who is famous for the words, Veni, Vidi, Vici or I came, I saw, I conquered. It reminded me further of the Petra song "He Came, He Saw, He Conquered". I know I am dating myself by harkening back to the group Petra, but it is a classic. Be encouraged today by a song from the 80's and know that the Lord is alive and well and He has already won the victory!

He came alone into the battle
He knew nobody else could face His foe
He left His throne, He left His glory
He knew nobody else could ever go
He called the bluff, He took the challenge
He came into this world to seek and save
No one could know, No one could fathom
The way to win was only through the grave
They laid Him in His tomb
They thought they'd sealed His doom
But He rose
He rose!

He came He saw He conquered death and hell
He came He saw He is alive and well
He was He is and only He forgives
He died He rose He lives
He came He saw He conquered!

The doors were locked, they heard him knocking
they were afraid they would be taken, too
Familiar voice said, "Come and follow"
Come and see the things the Lord can do
They went to where He lay
The stone was rolled away
He rose! He rose!

He came into this world. He saw humanity.
He heard the SOS. He met the enemy.
The enemy was conquered. The enemy was conquered!

God gives dentists

Hi family and friends! This is Ingrid and I am going to tell you about going to the dentist.

On Wednesday morning, Mom, Martha, Lars, Ellie, Matthias and I went to the dentist to get our teeth checked. First they pulled a couple of teeth out....kidding! First, I had to wait a long time...zzzzzz...but I read some magazines, changed a diaper and played with Matthias. Matthias makes a long wait more pleasant! Martha went in first with a really, really nice new dental hygienist. Then Lars went in with Susan - she is very nice, too. OK, all of them are nice. Ellie went in with "NeNe". Let me explain. This dental hygienist had the same hair, same voice, a lot of similarities to my Tante NeNe. She wanted to take Matthias home with her, too! heehee Mom went in next. Then "NeNe" came to get me!

First, I got comfortable in the chair and she put a "bib" on me. Second, she scraped my teeth. She was looking for food that was left behind by my toothbrush. Third, she used a spinny toothbrush with strawberry toothpaste to brush my teeth. Fourth, she washed my mouth out with water. That felt good. Fifth, she flossed my teeth. Sixth, the dentist came in and talked to me about my teeth. She asked if I had any fillings or pain. She gave me some good news! NO CAVITIES!!! Hallelujah! Seventh, the dental hygienist (NeNe) gave me a cup of water and I swished it around in my mouth and spit it down this tube thing. Eighth, I asked her if I needed braces. She told me that I should see an orthodontist because I will need braces in the future. Ninth, I chose some prizes: a rainbow bracelet, 2 pirate eye patches for Bjorn and me, a psychedelic orange tooth case, 2 stickers, 2 flossers, a toothbrush and toothpaste. Tenth, we stopped at Wendy's for lunch (thanks, Mom) and then went home. I am thankful that God gives us dentists so our teeth don't rot!

God gives poems for Fall days

How the Leaves Came Down

"I'll tell you how the leaves came down,"
The great Tree to his children said:
"Your're getting sleepy, Yellow and Brown,
Yes, very sleepy, little Red.
It is quite time to go to bed."

"Ah!" begged each silly, pouting leaf,
"Let us a little longer stay;
Dear Father Tree, behold our grief!
'Tis such a very pleasant day,
We do not want to go away."

So, for just one more merry day
To the great Tree the leaflets clung,
Frolicked and danced, and had their way,
Upon the autumn breezes swung,
Whispering all their sports among-

"Perhaps the great Tree will forget,
And let us stay until the spring,
If we all beg, and coax, and fret."
But the great Tree did no such thing;
He smiled to hear their whispering.

"Come, children, all to bed," he cried;
And ere the leaves could urge their prayer,
He shook his head, and far and wide,
Fluttering and rustling everywhere,
Down sped the leaflets through the air.

I saw them; on the ground they lay,
Golden and red, a huddled swarm,
Waiting till one from far away,
White bedclothes heaped upon her arm,
Should come to wrap them safe and warm.

The great bare Tree looked down and smiled.
"Good-night,  dear little leaves," he said.
And from below each sleepy child
Replied, "Good-night," and murmured,
"It is so nice to go to bed!"

God gives good eyesight

Hi Everyone! This is Bjorn.

I would like to tell you about a hunting trip.

Lars, Dad, and I went to hunting camp. We left on Thursday morning and we got there around 2:00 in the afternoon. We unloaded the truck, started a fire in the woodstove, put on plaid shirts and jeans and went to the Main Farm. Dad's note: the majority of the hunting takes place on the Main Farm which is a working dairy farm in Worcester and Decatur New York. Back to Bjorn: We brought the Polaris 500 ATV with us to scout the farm and put up a tree stand for future hunting. We went back up to the truck, got another blind, and went back across the creek and pretty far away. This is where we set up the blind for the hunt on Friday. We went back up to the truck and parked the ATV at the Main Farm. Back to hunting camp for supper and hunting shows on TV. It got pretty dark so we went to bed.

Friday morning, we woke at 5:00 and ate oatmeal for breakfast, got dressed for hunting, and headed for the Main Farm. Lars hunted for deer. Dad and I hunted for turkeys. We saw nothing. Back to hunting camp for lunch and rest. At 3:00 we headed back to the Main Farm. Lars thinks he saw 3 turkeys but they were too far away. When Dad and I got out of the blind Dad saw a deer behind us but the deer ran away. Back up to the ATV and back up to the truck and back to camp. We had sandwiches to eat and watched an African hunting show where a man shot an elephant with a bow - the bow had a 90 pound draw! Crazy.

Saturday morning was oatmeal and hot chocolate for breakfast at 4:30 am. (Mom says wow.) When we got into our blind we heard coyotes howling - sounded like 2 packs. (Mom says yikes.) Our morning hunt was unsuccessful so we went back to hunting camp for lunch and rest. Got up at about 3:00 in the afternoon, got dressed and ready and headed to the Tower Farm for the second hunt of the day. Martha's note: the Tower Farm is only used for planting corn. It has a radio tower on it. Back to Bjorn. At about 5:00 I spotted a deer. God gives good eyesight! About 2 minutes later, Dad spotted a doe - a really nice one. Dad's deer got spooked by something and trotted off but my deer was still there. We waited until my deer got broadside and Lars shot. He hit the deer right in the shoulder and it dropped in its tracks. It was about 120 yards away. We went up there and realized that it was a button buck. It was awesome. We gutted it out right there and Dad brought the truck to carry the deer back up to camp. We skinned it and took the meat off and after bisketti and hot Italian and sweet Italian sausage in the sauce we went to bed.

Sunday morning we woke up and we ate eggs, sausage and toast. We packed up the truck, went to the Main Farm to pick up the ATV, and went home.

God gives teeth

It's official! Matthias Carl would like you all to know that he has his first tooth! I will now let him tell the rest of the story...

Yes, it's true what Mommy says. At just over six months old, my first tooth emerged with lots of drama one night early this week. Mommy could not figure out why I was so fussy and would not fall asleep, even though it was clear that I was exhausted. Well, for those of you who do not remember getting your first tooth, let me remind you that it's no picnic. (I have been drooling a lot so that should have been my Mommy's first clue.) Finally, all the clues came together and it was as if the light dawned. Mommy reached into my mouth and rubbed my bottom gum, right over the spot that was bothering me most. That was all it took. I was most satisfied and fell asleep right away. Mommy giggled and called in Daddy, who was amazed. They carried me to my bed and, after lots of kisses, they said good night. I have been showing off my new tooth to everyone who pulls down my bottom jaw. (It's a bit slippery with my drool.) I even practice using my new tooth when Lars puts his finger into my mouth. I enjoy watching him jump! I am thankful for my new tooth and am looking forward to getting my second one! Well, my last bottle of the night is now finished and I am off to dreamland. Good night, sweet family! Much love!!!

Thank you for writing, sweet son. Sing yourself to sleep now and stay under your warm blankets. It is quite chilly tonight. And thank you, Lord, for teeth.

God gives skills

Hello, this is Eleanor,

Mom ( as you know) FORCED me to write something on the blog, and of course, I have to obey, so here it goes:
Ingrid and I are members of a 4H club called Stone Archers. We sign in, then we stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and the 4H pledge. The 4H pledge goes like this: I pledge my Head to clear thinking. my Heart to greater loyalty. my Hands to larger service, and my Health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world.

The reason our club is called Stone Archers is  because of this verse: "But his bow remained in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong By the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob (From there is a Shepherd, the Stone of Israel.)" Genesis 49:24. Mom recommended that you read the entire chapter. It's all about Jacob blessing his sons.

As you can tell, the Stone Archers is an archery club. But before we shoot, we do stretches and go over the rules before we even pick up our bows. Sometimes we shoot candy- filled balloons and other times we shoot paper pumpkins.

The leader of our club is a good friend of our family and her name is Cara Fantauzzi. Martha has been a mothers helper for the family for over 2 years. Mrs. Fantauzzi is helped by 2 helpers. Their names are Abigail and Joe.

I am really happy to be a part of this club. I know all of the kids in this club and many of them are my  friends. I am thankful that I can be a part of this club and I am glad that I can work on the skill of archery. hope to write to you guys soon!!!

God gives us gardens

As the glory of Fall sets in, sometimes it's nice to remember Summer's gardens.

One Wednesday in early Summer I, Martha, worked the entire day on digging up a garden at the side of our house. That's where I transplanted five of our rhubarb plants. I can't say they did very well the first year, but I did get to make a few crisps and such using the rhubarb. The pictures below are the plants that did really well in my garden! I planted sunflowers along the house at the back of the garden, two marigold plants towards the front, and lots of zinnias! Some didn't come up, but the ones that did turned out beautifully. Enjoy the pictures!

 Marigolds

God gives poetry for windy days

Little Wind

Little wind, blow on the hill-top,
Little wind, blow down the plain;
Little wind, blow up the sunshine,
Little wind, blow off the rain.

God gives guns

Hi everyone, this is Lars

Mom forced me to write something for our family blog so I've chosen to tell you about the first new shooting sports 4H club that has been started in Saratoga County in twenty years. Martha and I are part of this new club and it's called the Saratoga Sentinels. There are about a dozen youth who are part of the club. The leader is a good friend of our family and a father of four. He shares the responsibility of leading the club with 2 junior instructors and some other teachers including my dad.

During the first two meetings we have gone over what we will be doing in the club and gun safety and club rules. We also elected officers. I am the treasurer.

There is also something very unique and interesting about this shooting sports club: it is one of the only clubs in the country that is teaching shooting sports and STEM together. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. One example of this is using a chronograph which measures the speed of a bullet. Then we can calculate how much force the bullet has when it impacts the target. Another example of STEM is learning about how the gun powder is potential energy. The gun powder is turned into kinetic energy when the trigger of the gun is pulled and the firing pin strikes the primer of the cartridge which creates a spark and ignites the gun powder. The gun powder burns very fast creating lots of pressure which forces the bullet out the end of the cartridge and down the barrel and to the target.

This year we will be shooting mainly 22's and later on, once some of the leaders get qualified, we will be shooting air rifle, shotgun, muzzle loaders. Next time I will write about a wet telephone book.

God gives us ministry

Hi again everyone-it's Martha.

For the past year and a half, I've been involved with a ministry called Lifesavers. No, not the candy:) It is a ministry providing help to ladies facing crisis pregnancies. It promotes life as the only choice in an unplanned pregnancy. Each Tuesday morning, at about 8am a lady from church picks up my friend and I, and for the whole morning and sometimes into the afternoon, we are in the heart of Gloversville, NY at Lifesavers. For those of you who don't know, Gloversville was once the hub of America's glove-making industry, making it a desirable place to live. Since the industry went under, however, it has become anything but that. The women (and sometimes men) that come into Lifesaver's all have their own story and are looking for someone who cares about them. It is an extremely needy city where poverty and crime is rampant. Lifesaver's is a light in a very dark place. Each week, a lot of moms come to a class called Soulutions, which gives them practical advice on parenting and raising babies and children of all ages. It is a Christian organization and the moms have a devotion as well. My friend Alyssa, the lady from church, me, and a few other ladies volunteer at childcare for the kids of the moms that come on Tuesday morning. The kids get time to play, time to color, a snack, and most importantly, a Bible story taught so that they can understand it. Lifesaver's also has several events during the week like Mom and Me art classes, Scrapbooking, Bible study, to name a few. They also have a branch of the ministry called TLC that sends out boxes to moms who need basic things like diapers for their babies and sometimes food. I've worked in that building a few times. Also they assist some moms in earning their GED because a lot of the young moms haven't completed High School yet. One mom can't read, and one worker has been helping her learn to read! Their motto is: Repairing lives one heart at a time. Every week at Lifesavers we are hoping and praying that every minute spent in loving care of the precious children will result in eternal good. This past Saturday night I had opportunity to go to their annual fundraising banquet.  Look around in your area for ministries like this and consider volunteering or being in prayer for them. Abortion is a ever-growing plague, and organizations warring against it are always needed.

God gives us food!

In a big family, a full freezer in the winter months is a comfort. Rolls make a nice addition to any meal especially when they can come straight from the freezer and be warmed in the oven for a few minutes. My family has enjoyed these rolls as the best we've ever had and easiest to make.

Buttermilk Pan Rolls
Makes approximately 80

18-23 C flour (we use a combination of AP and whole wheat flours)
1 C buttermilk blend(this is a dry buttermilk blend made by saco. Available in most grocery stores.)
1/2 C sugar
2 T salt
4 1/2 tsp. active dry yeast
1 tsp. baking soda
7 C warm water
1 C oil (we use olive oil.)

Instructions:
Mix 15 C flour and next five ingredients. Stir in more flour to make soft dough. Knead or mix for 10 minutes. Put in big greased bowl to rise 1 1/4 hours (we sometimes put the dough, covered with a towel in the refrigerator to rise and bake the next day). Punch down and divide into 80 balls. they all fit in two greased 15x10 pans. Cover the pans and let rise until double the size-usually about 30 minutes. Oven set to 375. Bake 20-30 minutes or until golden brown.

We enjoyed some of these for lunch today. These are great rolls to give to people as well. Lars, mom, and I figured out that this recipe costs less than $10. to make.
the last pan in the oven!
ready to eat, freeze, or wrap to give away!

God gives patience

A bit of a back story first...

In June of this year, Todd was notified that his retirement was official. This set the wheels in motion for our impending move with Carl and Ede to the state of Virginia. Through many conversations and with much prayer and careful consideration, it was decided that Tennessee made more sense for Carl and Ede. This move puts them in a good financial spot and eliminates the constant work (inside and outside) of a large home. Virginia no longer makes sense for our family either, so our attention has turned toward TN or northern Mississippi. This will put us close to Scott and Nancy and family and Carl and Ede in TN and Kate and her family in MO, not to mention all of the Harro connections.

So...

Our home was put on the market at the beginning of July and, as of today, we have had one offer. The offer was turned down with the advice of our realtor because the folks who made the offer have a home to sell in Schenectady...good luck. We are currently waiting for another offer from a very interested party and just yesterday we had a second showing for someone else. This waiting game requires a great deal of patience. Please pray that we will be patient and kind with one another as this long ordeal plays out. Pray for contentment as we bloom where we are planted for now. We thank the Lord that He does not leave us on our own but gives us the help of the Holy Spirit. Where would we be without Him? Thanks for your prayers on our behalf.

God gives best friends

A dog is a man's best friend.

Today, October 2nd, we had the sad duty of letting go of our family's best friend. Madea had been limping for almost a year and we, with the vet's advice, understood that limping to be just some joint pain caused by her positive lyme disease diagnosis. But when Todd picked her up from the kennel on Tuesday morning we knew that something was wrong. We suspected that her shoulder was out of place or that the swelling had just gotten much worse. We had a showing on Wednesday evening but to get her into the truck was very difficult. To get her out took my "helping" her down. She seemed sad and tired but, as always, she was a wonderful and happy passenger. So on Thursday morning, Todd, Ingrid, and Bjorn took her to the vet but did not bring her home. Cancer was the culprit. It had eaten its way through her shoulder and if they had done a more complex xray it probably would have shown it spread into her lungs. Our hearts are broken and we have all shed a few tears. She would have been 10 years old in January. We are so grateful for our best friend. Madea will be missed.

God gives rest and fun times, too!

Thousands of thanks for a wonderful visit to Tusen Takk this past week, Mom and Dad/Bestemor and Bestefar!!!!!!

We arrived on Tuesday afternoon, the 23rd of September and Mom had made soup with chorizo and kale and beans. We added some homemade rolls and enjoyed some supper after unloading the van. That morning we had said good bye to Carl and Ede and Todd as they began on the long trip to TN.

Wednesday, we celebrated Ingrid's 10th birthday with some jalapeno poppers, hot dogs and brats cooked over a bonfire by the water and some chocolate cake with kisses. Some kids went swimming in the 60 degree weather!

Thursday we hung out and did some relaxing and fishing and yes...swimming again - warmer weather, though.

Friday we toured Adonijah Bidwell's home in Tyringham, MA. He was a pastor in the 1750's so this field trip really enhanced our Early American studies in History. A mystery to ponder: all of his sermons were written in Latin and Greek and in his own version of shorthand...why? After the Bidwell house tour, we enjoyed a picnic on the tables in the front yard and the weather could not have been better. Then Bestemor and Bestefar insisted on a stop at the Granval Scoop for some ice cream. Some of the children even tried out a hay maze. Swimming followed the arrival home, then hot showers and warm towels from the handy dryer. Another round of Scattegories and then bed.

On Saturday morning, we traveled to Delmar NY for Dale Harro's funeral. What a fitting and memorable service. We got to reconnect with so many and meet some new faces, too! Guess what the children did on our arrival home...Swim!

Sunday was a day to relax and welcome Cliff and Michelle and the children. They brought some Mrs. Murphy's and (we hope) got a chance to rest.  Funny note: both Matthias and Ruthie are in size 3 diapers! Michelle and I had the little ones out in the sun while the older kids swam and played. The Larsens headed home early to prepare for the week ahead. We also said good bye to B and B after their amazing and bizarre tour of the Pollitt home next door. Mom can fill everyone in...

On Monday the children and I just hung out and I did some preliminary cleaning in anticipation of our departure on Tuesday, the 30th. We enjoyed leftovers from the frig and fish fried in bacon caught by my sons. Mom came to be at the house for the furnace guy and we taught her how to play Bjorn's new game, Sequence. Tuesday, I took the little one on our last walk around the lake at sunrise and we left at 10:15, stopped at Otis Poultry Farm for chicken pot pies to take home, and were home by 12:45. Whew!
